UPDATE: Google has released version 0.10.1, this guide is based on the 0.10.0 code but there should not be any major deviations. As always post on the Google Gadgets for Linux message board if you run into problems.
I was never a fan of desktop gadgets/widgets as most of the ones available performed horribly and had [...]

Last year I was honeymooning in Australia, this year I’m in Wisconsin starting a new job and still unpacking the new house.
I hate missing this, especially since my dissertation focuses on this fabulous group of passionate placebloggers, but I’ve already promised myself I won’t miss Mardi Gras next year and I won’t miss [...]

There is both far too little and far too much going on right now. I just started a new job doing tech support for USF, which is turning out to be an incredibly sweet gig. The pay is horrible, but the fact that I’m doing tech support and helping people (yay) without the soul crushing [...]

I created this post over at The Lazy Bloggers Post Generator:
Darling I just had a terrible scare when I thought I have not updated this since people stopped clapping and Tinkerbell died… You would not believe how insane my life has become. Apologies to my regular readers! Even the little blue ones!.
I am overwhelmed with [...]

As much as I enjoy the trendy books out there on the internet and collaborative software, Howard Rheingold is the only author of such texts that I know of who also actively considers social media’s impact upon teaching.
Whether it’s his video letting his students see his point of view when looking out into [...]

Yesterday I received my first shipment from drugstore.com. While the locals in Wisconsin probably think the weather lately has been hot & humid, it’s been “perfectly perfect in every way” for me. Considering I grew up in NOLA and lived in Tampa for the past 5 years, 86-degree weather is nothing to me! [...]

I’m finally back from an exhausting week at Camp Boggy Creek. Walking back from the firework show, I caught a glimpse at the beautiful moonlight on the lake. There is something about being in a place like Boggy that makes you want to love everyone around you. Wouldn’t the world be a [...]

And so, when I left my Apartment in Tampa, I broke the room 304 fellowship. I must admit, we did have a decent year. The guy who lived next to me was evicted and someone else moved in for the summer…forming the sequel to the story. I wonder how the place will [...]

After being several month’s away from Tampa, I discovered that going to mass at the Catholic Center has not changed a bit. I took my violin and my music to church. Surprisingly, the music was in the same place where I left it two months ago. When I got to church, [...]

Life is sometimes like opened soda cans on your desktop. A very strange feeling of disappointments and disillusions. I haven’t been back to my dorm for many weeks and came back only to find a part of my life i can’t seem to fit back into. Hopefully, I will adjust soon.

We’re only a little over a month away from the public opening of the new building! New pictures can be found on the Flickr site. Things are looking great and moving at a much faster pace now.

This summer is flying by and I can’t believe it! Here’s a quick time line of events:
In late May, we visited our new hometown of Menomonie, Wisconsin, and checked out several houses. Put in an offer, but was rejected.
In early June, I visited friends in Orlando and was extremely disappointed with the Sex [...]

I noticed that since I only had the blog link included in the menu of the main page it looked odd as I jumped from page to page, so I added the blog link to the menu on every page. Maybe it’s a small thing that no one else will notice but it sure stuck [...]

Dr. Simon’s advanced links was very helpful for my future web design activities. I bookmarked quite a few as I will need to spend some time exploring the sites in detail and trying the programs.
-
I sent the link for my web project to a few of my library colleages to see if they find any issues. Already I have infor on spelling errors. Next time I’ll find an editor with spell checking. It is great when you have friends with backgrounds different than your own as they will look [...]

Originally I wanted to use rollover buttons in my menu but did not know how. Creating the buttons was easy as I have done that before several times for other projects. I have found that printing the screen once you get the button right is a good way to have all the size/color/font info hany [...]

I’m writing this during a break at the blended session. I’ve seen lots of great design examples so far. It is amazing how creative we all are if we just would give it a try.

So I got a massage last night by my friend Kari. It was my first ‘non painful’ massage and I enjoyed it. It took me a while to relax but I got comfortable after a while. I did think it was weird that Florida Law requires massage patients to be wrapped up in a sheet. [...]

I love typography site has a simple design with a white background and black lettering. It is easy to navigate and has an extensive list of articles about typography.

I spend three hours trying to add a RSS news feed to my home page. I tried lots of types but few worked well enough even to consider. I don’t know if I’ll mess with this further but I do want something dynamic on the main page.

The text chapters on Google Adsense and Amazon Associates was a big help to me. I have used eBay/Paypal before and it was not difficult. Both Google and Amazon are good ways to help fund a site and if the content is valuable it will drive more folks to your site.

Okay…
This was mentioned at orientation so I’m trying it out.

Ones I liked;
15 Examples of Excellent Web Typography - This was good in that there was something specific and limited in scope.
Microsoft Typography - Nice clean site. Even though it MS, you ot to keep on top of what they are up to. the Web imbedded fontstool looked interesting.
ABC Typography - Who would not like [...]

Turns out I think my flash drive is going buggy. I can get to Dr. Simon’s page without the error if the flash drive is not installed. Time to get another one.

Urban Dirty had a black background with white lettering. This is very dramatic! It had a simple navigation bar that enables the user to view free textured photos of surfaces. An extensive collections of photos. This site linked to Grunge Texture. This site has a great color scheme. It fits well with the site. It [...]
-
Chapter 4 in Principles of Beautiful Web Design discusses typography or communication. The site communicates with its users through the use of type or lettering. This means fonts. Much like color, fonts can convey different moods and meanings. Certain fonts go with certain sites. Some fonts are formal and some are not. Some fonts are [...]

This video of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor speaking is absolutely amazing. [BTW all of the TED talks are great]
I appreciate her honest emotion so much, particularly b/c it helps me understand my best friend Sarah’s recent stroke [chronicled here on NOLA.com] and once again feel completely optimistic that she will recover 100%!

In adding a link to Dr. Simon’s website I noticed an error box pops up. Seems to happen no matter what direction you are comming from. I snagged a picture of it and forwarded it in an email in case it is something with the USF side.

My web project is moving forward as I create content for the pages. Not having much trouble now that I have templates made for the main page and the sub-pages.
I still have lots of work left but it is starting to look like a “Web Site”.

I dropped off Cale, and Nuri, at the Orlando airport yesterday afternoon so he could fly to Norway and Europe for 18 days. Cale was feeling sick a few days before and took some medicine to try to get rid of it. I don’t think it worked all that well because when I was driving [...]

In looking into current use of textures and backgrounds I found a lot of inspiration for other sites I may do in the future. The urban and grunge styles were very interesting in use of color, texture, and balance.

My web project is proceeding better now that I settled on a visual theme. Now I am beginning to work on content, links, and subpages. One hassle is that notepad has no spell checking and if I open an HTML file in Word, it goofs it all up. So I made a temp.txt file to [...]

This information was very helpfull to me. In the past, there was much mystery in my mind as to what to focus on in promoting a web site. I think the concept of investing most of our time in making the site as top notch as possible is valid and next concentrating on community/communication. The [...]

Colorsontheweb.com was a great site for defining color usage for web sites. The site used color well to define differenet areas on the site. It also had a double menu near the top of the page. It provides lots of information about color on the site as well as many links to outside sources [...]

Texture is the topic of chapter 3, in Principles of Beautiful Web Design. Texture give the design or specific objects on the site a certain “feel or appearance.” Points make up all the graphic items on the site and lines can convey movement. A lines thickness adds character and can separate different areas of the [...]

My new web project design is really coming together. Last night I worked on it, tweaking one element at a time (sometimes with undesired effects). Colors on the Web - Very handy site. I liked the “Color combinations”, the “Color Wizard”, and the “Contrast Analyzer” but found “Spin the color wheel” interesting but useless. Webstyleguide.com has a monchomatic color scheme and is an easy to use design. It is one of those well laid out site that you quickly can navigate around. It has a right sided menu and a table of contents. A step by step way through learning web design. Just filled with information. It also [...]

Chapter 2 in Principles of Beautiful Web Design starts with “color psychology.” This is how certain colors effect emotions. Some examples are red equals passion and excitment, green equals nature and growth and blue openess and intelligence. There are warm and cool colors. Warm colors stand out in a cool background color. Just like [...]

Yes, I know I go on and on about Twitter, but even when it has its issues [can you say Fail Whale?], it’s still the place people keep coming back to [even after this week’s mini-exodus to Plurk!]

This is an interesting concept. We who use the Internet for any length of time gravitate towards sites that are usable TO US. That doesn’t always mean they are highly usable by others. The more “noobs” that get on the Web force designers to think of new ways to make their sites easy for the [...]

Great stuff here. I’m continually learning more about aspects of web creation that I either used to know or should have learned.
Web Style Guide - Very deep material, well organized, and good graphic examples.
Universal Usability - As deep as the above but in a softer style. I liked the code examples next to the graphics.
JJ.net [...]

As I examine various examples of HTML and CSS for this class, I can see how powerful style sheets are and how they have impacted web design. I have always viewed the source code of web sites I liked but now I understand better how the authors are manipulating the elements to get various effects.
-
Although I had worked some with CSS before, I really did not get the overall plan. This past chapter I read explained it very well and it makes sense now. I especially appreciate how an external style sheet with assigned elements and classes lets me control the appearance of my pages with only one place [...]
-
The chapters on color and layout were very helpful. I had thoughts on these things and what I felt looked good and it tuns out most of my ideas were grounded in good design. I think mostly from noticing what looked “right” over the years and having a good eye for visual balance.
-
Today I worked more with GIMP, attempting to get my page banner cleaner looking. I also experimented with CSS options based on some expamples I found in the tutorial links.
-
Dr. Simon included several links about Internet statistics (Internet Traffic Report, Internet World Stats) and Internet research firms (Pew, Nielson) and I found them very helpful in both better understanding the organization of the Internet and how individual users thoughts and opinions are interpreted.
-
On www.icann.org, the colors were pleasing the eye. It had two clearly defined menus and gave you various ways to move around the site. The site is well laid out and provided a lot of information.
www.internettrafficreport.com uses black, white and some darker accent colors, and this shows how simple and defined this color combination is. [...]

Chapter 1 in Principles of Beautiful Web Design is loaded with information. It adds some humor and breaks down web design in simple terms. The example is a business web site, but the methods work with any type of site. The important things to understand when designing the site are what does the company do [...]

Well, I have given up using komposer. Back to Notepad! I spent several hours redoing my original page making it more like I want. It now uses an external style sheet. I had to poke aroun the tutorials and the Web to find some expinations and examples of what I wanted to do and I [...]

Elluminate recently released a new version of Elluminate (version 8.2). Currently we are using Elluminate 7. Elluminate 8 has several new features and we have now upgraded our servers to Elluminate 8 (May 28, 2008). This upgrade will not affect your existing sessions, session links, Elluminate moderators login url (http://elluminate.acomp.usf.edu), user records, and past recordings. [...]

Many moderators choose to share their entire desktop when using application sharing. This means that the participants viewing your desktop can see everything that you as a moderator can see, including private messages in the Chat window. You may not want other participants to view these private messages, so here is a little trick.
Using [...]

Occasionally, users attempting join an Elluminate Live! session may receive the message, “Your session is running on a different session server - please retry or contact your administrator.”
It is important to launch your session from links provided by our administration system or via your moderator (for students) and not from .jnlp files previously saved [...]

As a moderator in Elluminate Live! V8, you can use Presentation Mode to change the view of the whiteboard or an application-sharing window to fill the entire Elluminate Live! window. When you use Presentation Mode, everyone in the session automatically has the same full-window view until either they “opt out” or you end Presentation Mode [...]
-
When each user joins an Elluminate Live! session, a private work area is created with one blank screen called Private Screen 1, which can’t be seen by anyone else, including the moderator. While moderators can use their own private work areas at any time, participants can use their private work areas only when granted permission. [...]

I went over the tutorial for attaching the SSH client to my USF webspace and it went just fine. I went ahead and uploaded the basic index.html page I had worked on in komposer and was able to view it in IE. I did rename the original USF placeholder page first.

I’ve been doing some investigation into the energy consumption of second generation P2P systems, specifically BitTorrent.
There is a pretty decent push towards using set top boxes in consumer’s home for legal content distribution. In fact, this type of system is being proposed by Pablo Rodriguez at Telefonica here. The benefits to content providers are tremendous. [...]

Again I see a three column layout, though not as visually divided. This site contains a different type of information in that toutorials and examples tend to be more static over time. However, the center column still contains more “news” type information. Overall both W3 sites are very “clean” looking. High contrast text, tasteful [...]

Creating Web Sites is an easy book to understand. It’s well laid out and has many helpful hints. Chapter 1, when creating a website, it’s important to keep it simple and organized. It’s best to focus on the content and then, the graphics. The graphics should not overpower the content. The organization of the site [...]

I began reading this book today and I like the style of this author. One thing that interested me was the description of various aspects of web design and how people specialize. The one that caught my eye was “Information Design”.
Also, I downloaded Nvu as an alternative to komposer. AND, since I need motivation in [...]

Been watching the webcasts of the plenary sessions at the Berkman@10 conference all day. From the realm of “things you didn’t know, and never expected to hear”…

In any other niche of the entertainment industry, if your star appeared for all their interviews wearing hoods to conceal their face it might mean disaster. Andrew Sullivan perfectly summarized in his article exactly why Hillary is losing her appeal. It essentially boils down to her belief that white people would never vote for a black President. In reading chapters 1/2 in “Creating Web Sites” it was the same information I began my classes with a few years ago. I taught adult education classes in several subjects. One class was called “intro to Web design” and I made the students use windows notepad and HTML. I had examples of good and bad [...]
